Scholastic might be best known for its magazine, for its traveling book fairs, for Clifford The Big Red Dog, The Magic School Bus or maybe as the US publisher of Harry Potter. Donovan/Green was asked to think about a destination experience for children, their parents, caregivers and teachers. They wanted it to be lively, engaging and encompass a variety of experiences – story-time space for its youngest visitors and their adult chaperones, a grown-up area for pre-teens attracted to their age-appropriate materials, and yet another area with a different ‘vibe’ hospitable to teachers looking for classroom resources. The space itself had a modestly scaled footprint and a very high ceiling. Separating audiences with different needs drove the design, with second level cozy spaces like a treehouse for the pre-teens and quiet back space for the teachers.
